Big Tent, 1997.
I first went to Burning Man in 1995 with a group of friends and friends-of-friends. By the following year, our group had tripled in size and we needed a large shaded community space for couches, tables, the DJ booth, and the bar. The project had several challenging design constraints: it needed to provide shade for over 100 people, it had to withstand the strong winds of Black Rock Desert, and it needed to be relatively easy to set up and dismantle. I based my design on an inverted umbrella and worked with a fabricator to build the components. I no longer go to Burning Man, but the Big Tent still does, and it's become the center of our village.
