I'm the son of a lawyer and an artist, the older brother of a professional drummer, and I grew up in a suburb of Los Angeles, California. I spent my youth drawing, building things from cardboard, taking pictures, making art, and riding my bike. In the past forty years, not much has changed.
I started out in architecture, but I ended up majoring in graphic design and photography at San Jose State University. After I graduated, I moved to San Francisco and began working in the marketing departments of high-tech companies in the burgeoning Silicon Valley. To ease the commute, I began carpooling with a colleague, who quickly became my closest friend, biggest supporter, most trusted advisor, muse, and bride. Our story is here. The majority of my professional design work has been identities, brands, collateral, and advertising for companies all over the world; for the past several years I've also been designing architectural signage and wayfinding systems, packaging, and annual reports. I won an Addy for a brochure I designed, and an Icon Award for the packaging I designed. I was quoted in Communication Arts, but I don't remember what I said or the issue in which I said it. My résumé is here if you're looking for that sort of thing, or you can review my entire work history and look at some of my personal projects. I try to update my blog on a regular basis, and I occasionally post photographs here. I spend my free time experimenting with welding, silkscreening, filmmaking, and various photographic processes. I'm available to speak about careers in graphic design, so please feel free to contact me if you'd like me to appear at your school, library, community center, or church. When I'm asked for advice, I say, "Do what you love", because that's what I've done for the past forty years, and it's worked out well. |
